Romania meets Africa! Young people from Romania go to Rwanda to discover Africa beyond prejudices through: “Take your Chance, Be the Change!”, for a new generation of journalists!

“Take your Chance, Be the  Change!” is a project made by „European Peer Training Organisation”(EPTO) from Belgium,  „League for Education, Culture and Sport”(LECS) from Romania and „Urungano Youth and Media” from Rwanda, in order to create a new generation of young journalists Europe-Africa, to promote a culture of peace.

Working with 14 organizations from 14 countries in Europe and Africa, we chose the most suitable 24 participants.
On May 17, 2011 Maria Sandu and Irina Ursu from Romania, along with 10 other journalists from Europe and 12 from Africa will go to Kigali, Rwanda where a Training of Trainers will take place in order to:
-raise awareness of the role of media in spreading prejudices and stereotypes;
-raise awareness of their own prejudices and stereotypes;
-exchange experience and knowledge in the fields of  media, voluntary work and non-formal education;
-acquire skills to replicate those learned to people in the countries of origin;
-establish new projects and long-term partnerships with other organizations in Europe and Africa.

Why Kigali?
The genocide in Rwanda is a contemporary event, still present in everyone’s memory. This is why we consider Kigali an excellent opportunity for our trainers to facilitate the participants’ awareness of the impact, horrible damage and dramatic consequences which the stereotypes and prejudices can have on the community and how media can contribute to this.
This project is 80% funded by the European Commission and it is open for other sponsorship and media collaboration with those who want to support the building of “a new generation of journalists Europe-Africa. “

The call for participants in Romania has come to an end. Thank you to all the candidates that applied to “Take your Chance, Be the Change!”

We will now analyze all the applications in order to identify the best participants for the Peer training in Kigali. Some of you might be contacted for more details or an interview before the 12^th of January.

The results of the 1^st selection part will be sent to all applicants on the 17th of January. The selected ones will receive more information on the next steps of the selection on the European level. The final list of participants that will go to Rwanda will be announced on the 21st of February.

The main aim of “Take your chance, Be the change !” is: to create a Europe – Africa network of young journalists who are going to use media in order to promote healthy, positive values to the society.

What are we going to do?

1. We will organize a Training of Trainers, werw the participants will:

-become aware of the role that media plys in spreading prejudices and stereotypes;

-become aware of their own prejudices and stereotypes;

-will exchange experiences and knowledge in the youth field, media and non formal education;

-will gain abilities as multipliers for the people in their local areas.

2. We will offer support in order to reinforce the effects of the training and the project and to create new projects and long term partnerships.

Why did we choose Kigali to organize the training?

If, for the new generation, the Shoah begins to be a drama from the old time, Rwandan genocide is a very contemporary event, still present in each memory.

To organize the training of trainers in Rwanda,to listen to the testimonies of the survivors of the Genocide, to visit memorials,to bear the sight of scares, mutilations, amputations, to face the story of the recovery of this society, the forgiveness philosophy, but most important, to discover the media involvement in all this, are very strong experiences.

Every one of these activities is an exceptional opportunity for our trainers to make participants aware of the impact, the horrifying damages and the dramatic consequences that stereotypes and prejudices can produce in a community and how media can contribute to this .

This is why we think Kigali is probably the best place to go now to organize this training course, as an opportunity to raise the awareness of the participants on the universality of what happened in Rwanda.

How are we going to do this?

For the media, through the media

Through this training, we want to touch the media field. And the best way to do it is to use… the media!

This is why we will take a real advantage of Information and Communication Technologies and media to multiply and disseminate the expected results :

1.24 young or future journalists more aware of their prejudices, and the way they promote it through the media;

2. European-African network of organizations working;

3.an official website;

4.a weblog made by participants;

5. training organized by the participants in order to create a snowball effect in their countries;

6.short documentaries which are going to be spread in Europe and Africa in more than 16 countries.

EcoMarathon

We invite you to a different 1st of May: EcoMarathon!

EcoMarathon is both an alternative for spending the 1st of May and an alarm on the responsible attitude we need to have towards nature!

What is it about?
It will include three seperate races: a marathon, a cross and a race for children. More details and registration are available on www.ecomarathon.ro

Come run or just to admire the extraordinary landscapes and encourage the runners. You’ll find new places, paths crossing meadows and forests, houses with an unique charm, colorful landscapes and the contrast between the green pastures and the snowy peaks of the Bucegi will give you the opportunity to not feel tired. Why?
The idea of this marathon started from the desire of a group of enthusiastic people to:
- encourage as many people as possible to practice outdoor running and exercise;
- promote the practice of ecotourism in harmony with the environment;
- encourage the exploration of the trails,landscape and traditions of the area;
- mark and introduce the marathon route on the local tourist map.

For whom?

EcoMarathon is for lovers of outdoor exercise and mountains.

It is for both young people and adults, but especially for the child in each of us, the child for whom running is a natural thing.

How?
1. It is recommended that the arrival in the area be made in a thrifty way (by train, more persons in a car, public transport etc)
2. If possible, the applicants` registration will be made online
3. The use of disposable bottles,containers etc. will be minimized, we recommend the use of their own containers or hydration devices carried in the backpack
4. Participants will not polute the environment, will not throw household waste or other items used while running. Rule violation results in disqualification.
5. Competitors are not allowed to shorten the route, the existing trails must be respected and the route marked for the competition, so we will combat soil erosion
6. Runners and accompanying persons are wanted to show a profound respect for nature
7. Organizers will use a minimum quantity of paper (partly for registrations and diplomas of participation); or we will opt for a diploma in electronic form;
8. Participants who wish to donate their equipment which is still usable, are encouraged to do so.

The selection was difficult and the number of places limited. We are open to collaboration with the ones that show their interest even if they were not selected, in promoting the project or ensuring a consistent follow-up.

“Greenside-Out!”

Training for harmony with the nature.

“When we heal the Earth, we heal ourselves” (David Orr)

Being connected to natural surroundings is essential to our good mental and physical health. We need the nature in order to complete ourselves, to find a balance in our life, to be disconnected from a mad world and to be able to find that true and simple way of communicating with ourselves.

”Greenside-Out!” is an international training course for Green Multipliers which has the purpose of developing skills, knowledge and attitudes towards environmental education and nature preservation.

During the training sessions, the participants will receive tools, coaching and support in order to be able to change mentalities and to act as multipliers for their organizations.

“Greenside-Out!” will take place in Romania, in Eselnita, between 22nd – 30th of May, 2010!

Objectives

With this project we intend to:

• stimulate active participation of youth for nature’s protection and preservation;
• offer creative tools and methods for Green Education (environmental education);
• develop skills, knowledge and atitudes towards environment preservation and sustainable development;
• to raise awareness about glocal environmental problems;
• to discover how we can reduce our personal impact on environment (The individual carbon footprint) and to explore the connection between humans and nature;
• to create informal multipliers for Green Education.

Which methods will be used?

In “Greenside-Out!” we start with an individual aproach, the relationship humans-environment, in order to bring empathy and awareness and to boost the level of active participation. Using innovative and creative methods such as “the theatre of statues”, “non-formal music” or “group coaching”, we plan to help the participants to understand better their role in the local community and to find the ways they can act to preserve the environment.

Field tasks and the street action that includes handing out free cloth bags as an alternative to the plastic bags will help the participants understand the necessity of their involvement in their local communities and motivate the participants to become more actively involved in solving the glocal problems.

Target group

The training course is intended for eighteen participants from six countries (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Spain, Slovakia, Serbia and Romania), three persons from each country.

“Greenside-Out!” is a challenging training course, organized in cooperation with Cerebra (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Center for Intercultural Dialogue (Macedonia), Sole (Spain), Insight-Outside (Slovakia), ALTERO (Serbia) and C.A.D.D.R.U. (Romania).

The project has been funded with the support from the European Commission under Youth in Action programme. All costs for accommodation, food and training activities will be covered entirely by the programme, while the travel costs will be 70% covered.

The participants’ expenses are 30% of the travel cost and the participation fee (20 euro).

“Training for Action! Youth in Action” is a massive project for the developing of young pupils which study in Bucharest’s highschools, having the goal to become aware of the capacity of each individual to influence the change, letting apart the feeling of powerlessness, adopting a pro-active attitude.

The first event, “Training4Action01”,took place between 1st and 7th of February in Eselnita, Steaua Dunarii.

The participants, selected from Bucharest´s highschools, have developed their communicatin skills, have discovered about themselves, have developed the relationship with the environment, learned to appreciate life in other ways, to get over stereotypes and predjudice, realised that in order to make the change they want they have to act, own example beeing the most important thing.

As they also said, they came to the conclusion that when your really want something you have to do everything you can to obtain that, because nothing is impossible. The participants have managed to overcome different fears, to know themselves better, to exeed their own limits.

The young people shared a few impressions about their experience from Training4Action01 and also abot the impact that it´s had on them:

“It’s made me become more mature, and I realize as the days pass the importance of the things that until now we let of its own accord pass… ” (Robert Agarici)
